Working in partnership with The Parks Trust in Milton Keynes, we are pleased to confirm that Pride:MK will take place on 12th September 2020 in Campbell Park. The event will be family friendly and wheelchair accessible with BSL interpreters on site. There will be food, live music, entertainment and a stall area where local LGBTQ+ supportive businesses and service providers can connect with the community and sell / raise awareness of their products and services.

This year, on the 50th anniversary of Stonewall, Santander’s employee-led LGBT+ and allies network, called Embrace, has been more active than ever, ensuring Pride is recognised and celebrated throughout the communities Santander serves.

We believe that it is more important than ever to demonstrate our commitment to everyday inclusion, which is why as well as sponsoring Pride:MK, and of course attending many other Prides such as London, Glasgow, Leeds and Manchester, we also looked to reach a wider network by supporting newer Prides such as Dundee, Hull, Huddersfield and Worthing.  

We have officially attended 16 Prides in 2019, with more colleagues choosing to get involved in other events where they work and live, to which we have had an overwhelming positive response from customers and the general public alike.

Santander supports Milton Keynes

Last year we unveiled plans for a state-of-the-art new campus to support our long-term growth strategy – this represents an investment in Milton Keynes in excess of £150m.

Our new campus will act as our UK technology hub, delivering a boost for the Government’s vision of Cambridge-Milton-Keynes “growth corridor” nurturing the UK’s most innovative industries.

The proposed new office, to be home to over 5,000 staff, will replace our existing local office buildings with a world-class working environment specifically designed to encourage collaboration and innovation, supported by cutting-edge technology.

Features of the planned new campus will include:  

· An environmentally sustainable building designed around enhancing the health and well being of occupants;

· Event space for colleague training as well as community events and classes;

· A range of health facilities including a fitness centre, cycle storage and rooftop walking and running track; and

· Flexible collaboration space that will be offered to local businesses and community organisations.

We also recently announced our backing of MK:U, the UK’s first university focused on digital skills, providing £30 million of funding to help establish the university and further strengthen Milton Keynes’ position as Europe’s leading Smart City.  

MK:U is being developed by Cranfield University, and our involvement as a huge international and local employer reflects our need for career-ready, highly-skilled graduates for the digital age, which will provide jobs and growth for your wonderful town into the future.  It will provide a pipeline of talent and fantastic development opportunities for our staff in important areas including data science, artificial intelligence and cyber security.  

Like every industry, banking is being revolutionised by digital technology and we want to be at the forefront of this change for our customers.

Our contribution is one of the biggest corporate donations to British higher education in recent years.  Alongside £10m in capital financing, we will contribute £20m in running costs for the first three years of MK:U’s life. The capital costs will help finance iconic buildings in central Milton Keynes, which will serve as the heart of the new university.

My wife Mary and I started Pink Punters in 2000 - we owned Bletchley Nightclub for many years before that and had met so many different people who by the end of it, weren't just customers but friends. We had amassed a considerable following of people who identified as LGBTQ+ who wanted more. Over time, we started LGBTQ+ nights as at the time there was a very real need to provide safe spaces for same sex couples to hang out, discuss and dream about what heterosexual couples took for granted.Such as having a drink, holding hands, being intimate without fear, getting married and settling down to have their own families.

It took several years to really establish the Pink Punters brand as Milton Keynes was not known for attracting customers like the gay villages in the centre of Manchester, Birmingham, London & Brighton.

In 2009 we established our charitable Rainbow Operations which consists of the biggest gay bus in the world!!! It hosts its own crew and resources such as the rainbow village, stages, sound systems and space for media teams - and has been mobilised to hundreds of LGBTQ+ events across the UK. Our most memorable Rainbow Operation came after the homophobic murder of Ian Baynham in Trafalgar Square in September 2009. The organiser of the 'No to Hate' charity wanted to host a candlelit vigil in Trafalgar Square in his memory and contacted us for help. Within 24 hours Rainbow Operations had mobilised two lorries, one van and the biggest gay bus in the world along with a crew of rainbow volunteers to provide support to those mourning the loss of Ian under such horrific circumstances.
